FROCS Special

Gave the FS her first work-out yesterday evening. Pretty cold, solidly below 0. Had almost no more feeling in my fingertips when I loaded the 2nd cylinder. Dim light.
Always loaded all 6 chambers with a 140 gr RB/.451 dia over wad and 27 gr of BP.
The first cylinder was emptied from ca. 8 meters. Connected 5 times. POI was a bit low and to the left but OK for CAS, see pic below. The 6th cap did not ignite the load. Replaced it and just fired down range to empty the chamber.
The second cylinder was fired from ca. 15 meters. No center hits were noted. Had problems to see and align the sights (I always say that).
No felt recoil, pleasant shooting.
Loading was "different":
#loaded the individual chambers with the cylinder installed in the pistol from the flask, closed each chamber with a waxed wad
# pushed the wad in the 6 o'clock position down on the load with the PC brass loading rod, guided by the opening in the barrel lug.
# with all 6 chambers taken care of I placed a ball on the chamber mouth in the 6 o'clock position, and attempted to push it into the chamber with the PC loading rod, again supported by the hole in the barrel lug. Tried every trick known except using a hammer on the head of the loading rod, but did not succeed.
# removed the cylinder from the gun, placed the breech side on the loading table
# placed a ball on a chamber and hammered it into place using my plastic persuader. This resulted in a nicely sheared off ring of lead & might not be PC but it is functional. Then I gave the ball a final smack with another heavy duty non-PC loading rod and the hammer to move it firmly on the charge and below the rim of the chamber. Same procedure with the other chambers. Easy job after I figered it out.
So, what do we have apart from an interesting loading experience? It's fun to shoot the FROCS Special but loading with the PC loading rod does not work for me. Once we have better light again I'll give her another work-out at the longer ranges, from 15 and 25 meters. I love this little belly gun.
And somesthing else: in the OUTLAW JOSEY WALES Clint Eastwood shood have carried 4 FROCS Specials instead of 2 Walkers, 1 M1861 Navy and this .31 cal. pocket pistol: more firepower, easier on the horse, just one kind of bullets to carry around.

SG & all: found an orginal Centaure Pocket Army last week. Well, actually found 3 owned by an US collector who loves them. They were all having the barrel marking "1960 NEW MODEL ARMY", a post instead of a blade front sight, no visible serial numbers, silver plated backstrap and TG, bluted barrel. FAUL seems to have used taylor made barrels for this variant, see pic.
According to the proof marks she was made ca. 1962!
